Black sails to Brussels

6 Jun

Tomorrow it is time for the EU-election and the swedish party Piratpartiet have high chances of getting a seat. During the past weeks, the party’s brochures have been spread everywhere at the ITU. But is it true that computer geeks really vote for file sharing?

I know that many of us can’t resist downloading stuff; but does that mean that we for that reason want downloading to be legal? Or is just the possibility of downloading that brand new game, or that lovely new album too tempting?

Tomorrow is your last chance of voting in the election. And whatever your opinion might be, it’s really important that you vote. Make your voice heard!

My reason to vote for the pirate party had nothing to do with the suggested legalization of non-commercial file-sharing, but instead everything to do with the massive surveillance-state being built all around us.

With the risk of sounding paranoid, all this talk about file-sharing seems more to be the established parties and medias attempt to belittle and discredit the larger issues that (pp) focus on.

It is pretty easy for a person who haven’t read their program, to hear the name “Pirate party” and immediately jump to conclusions about what their program is probably about.

Since the effects of the Pirate party program would be the continuation of an Internet where people can communicate privately with each other and information can flow horizontally (instead of from the top (i.e. established media and “experts”) to the bottom (i.e. “consumers”)) is isn’t hard to imagine that newspapers and other media could have a stake in restricting the Internet.

I can’t back up any of this of course, except for my reason for voting, but the newspapers obsession with mapping the Pirate party to file-sharing could at best be explained by sloppy journalism, and at worst an attempt to mold public opinion.

Sorry for the long comment ;)

@wildcard, I have to say that you shouldn’t hesitate to write long comments! As long as they’re interesting… which of course, they’ve been so far. :)

Btw, isn’t hilarious that PP actually got a seat in the parliement after all?!

I’d like to share this through pusha.se but I feel there is a button missing…
